Have you discovered the Necromancy of Thay tucked away in a dark damp cellar in Baldur’s gate 3? This necromantic tome calls to you and wants to be opened. Unfortunately, everyone around you is pretty wary about letting you open the book and gain its knowledge. What secrets does this tome possess?

Before you can open the Necromancy of Thay, you need to get your hands on a key. Specifically, you will notice there is a circular hole in the mouth of the book. The key, however, is much more difficult to get than the book. Should you read the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Where to find the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3

If you still haven’t found the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3, it is located in the cellar of the apothecary in the Blighted Village. This is the village to the west of Emerald Grove that is infested with Goblins.

Once you reach the apothecary’s home, locate the door to the cellar and navigate through the area to find a mirror. This mirror will ask you five questions. If you answer all of the questions correctly, you will be granted access to the room containing the Necromancy of Thay.

How to unlock the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3

To unlock the Necromancy of Thay, you need to locate the Dark Amethyst in the Phase Spider Nest. The Phase Spider Nest is located at the bottom of the well in the center of the Blighted Village. Climb down the well to reach the nest. Be sure to investigate or drop a coin into the well beforehand.

You can either fight your way through the nest or take the sneak option. Sneaking is much easier and is less likely to result in your character meeting their untimely doom. You can find the Dark Amethyst at the end of the nest near a skeleton and an Ettercap. Once you have it, you can combine it with the book to unlock the Necromancy of Thay.

What happens if you read the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3?

There are multiple choices involved with the Necromancy of Thay. If you choose to read the book, you will need to pass three Wisdom checks increasing in difficulty from 10 and ending at 20. Succeeding at these saves will grant you the Forbidden Knowledge trait.

The Forbidden Knowledge Trait grants you a permanent +1 increase to all Wisdom saving throws and ability checks. It also grants you the Speak With Dead ability. There is really no downside to reading the book. You can choose to destroy it as well. Doing so will only make you less tempted to read it.
