Super Mario games have a very classic cast of characters, so fans become easily fascinated with new — or at least lesser-seen — Mario heroes. In Super Mario RPG, one of the most unique adventurers in your party is Mallow, a spunky and albeit clumsy little cloud with a mysterious background who ends up on an RPG adventure with everyone’s favorite plumber, Mario. But if you didn’t play the original Super Mario RPG in 1996, who is Mallow?
When did Mallow first appear in the Super Mario franchise?
Mallow first appeared in 1996 in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The 2023 Super Mario RPG is a modern remake of this game. While not a main character in any other title, Mallow appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and as a background theme in 2019’s Tetris 99 — a way to promote the upcoming 2023 Super Mario RPG game. Despite the huge gap in appearances, Mallow is a charming little guy that fans are excited to see in action again.
Though they came out in the same year, Mallow does not appear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
What is Mallow’s role in Super Mario RPG?
Before Super Mario RPG, Mallow was born the son of King and Queen Nimbus, a prince of Nimbus Land. However, at some point, Mallow was lost and Frog Sage discovered him near Tadpole Pond and raised him as his own. Frog Sage taught Mallow how to be an elemental mage. Meanwhile, though, Mallow never felt like a proper tadpole, unable to jump, swim, or have a tail. Despite his lack of froggy abilities, though, a light-as-a-feather character like Mallow is vital in a game full of hidden treasure and secret locations.
At the beginning of the game, Croco steals Mallow’s Rare Frog Coin that he was planning to use to buy Cricket Pie for Frog Sage. Mario helps him get it back. However, while they were gone, Shymores and Claymorton overrun the Mushroom Kingdom. They then go on a journey to try to help save the Mushroom Kingdom and other lands from danger.
