Teamfight Tactics (TFT) players are always on the lookout for the next fun, ultra-powerful, and whacky build. A souped-up Orianna, a giant Sett, the fastest Warwick on the Rift. Recently, the newest knockout off-meta build is Winds of War Galio, where you turn everyone’s favorite stoic protector into an even bigger and badder frontline. But, if you’re new to playing off-meta or not sure how to approach the build, how do you play Winds of War Galio in TFT?

What is Winds of War in TFT?

Winds of War is an augment in TFT that helps you create a mega-carry out of Galio, the stone colossus. In TFT set 9.5, Galio is a Demacia Invoker whose ability spell (Shield of Durand) creates a tornado-like wind across a few tiles. This tornado becomes a shield that reduces damage taken and heals Galio over 4 seconds. Afterward, when the shield and winds are dispelled, enemies take magic damage.

However, with the Winds of War augment, that ability spell will now take up more space and deal much more frightening damage. 8% of an enemy’s max Health per second, to be precise. Apply that to that 4-second period and the enemy will take more than 32% max health damage. This transforms Galio from a mediocre tank into a serious threat in this popular auto-chess game.

What to build for Winds of War Galio

A Winds of War Galio can destroy an entire board, but not because this turns him into a damage-dealing hotshot. He won’t need damage-focused items like Nashor’s Tooth — instead, stock him up with the likes of Warmog’s Armor and Bramble Vest and your Galio will be unkillable.

As far as a team goes, your best bet is an Ionian Invokers team, with a harder focus on Invokers. Think 6 Invokers, focusing on Karma, Ryze, and of course, a huge Gold/Three-Star Galio. Karma and Ryze will do the big critical-hit damage while Galio melts the front-line tanks and never lets the enemy get to the backline. Your Winds of War Galio will do his best the stronger and bigger he can get, so augmenting him with Bastion traits helps, too.

Important note: As much as you might want to try going into a game with a plan to build Winds of War Galio, any augment build (Sett, Warwick, Galio, etc.) only works if you get the augment in question. So you’ll just have to hope luck is in your favor and Winds of War pops up in your augment offering to play it. Otherwise, you have to build other builds.
