We have all heard stories of friends jumping off the Call of Duty train and switching to other games like Battlefield. For some time now, Call of Duty has been on a fast downhill track leading it into the abyss, and many have been jumping ship before it’s too late. If you take a look at more recent Call of Duty titles on Steam, Black Ops 7 has a 35% user rating, Black Ops 6 is sitting at 42%, and Modern Warfare 3 is sitting at 67%. To put it mildly, the franchise has been in a slump, with players begging Activision for a change.
That change may have arrived in the form of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The latest title in the Call of Duty line has officially been released for those who pre-ordered the game, and it is looking positive so far. In fact, this is the highest-rated Call of Duty title within the last decade.
Call of Duty Fans Praise Modern Warfare 4
Modern Warfare 4 has promoted a more grounded story, with the main focus being on a war caused by North Korea. This already had fans interested, as it is far different than the sci-fi nature of Black Ops 7, and most likely contains fewer giant versions of Michael Rooker.
Since Modern Warfare 4 became available for those who pre-ordered, it has received around 1,400 reviews on Steam, with these reviews giving it a solid 93% positive rating – higher than any Call of Duty game within the last decade. For example, previous games received these percentages:
- Black Ops 7 – 35%
- Black Ops 6 – 42%
- Modern Warfare 3 – 45%
- Modern Warfare 2 – 43%
- Cold War – 79%
- Infinite Warfare – 63%
- Modern Warfare (2019) – 81%
- Vanguard – 67%
Black Ops 4 is not on Steam, but it received a 4.3/10 user rating on Metacritic. The downhill spiral of Call of Duty titles in recent years has become a meme, with many criticizing the games for not taking a more realistic approach to warfare and pandering to a younger audience, with characters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appearing as skins in the multiplayer game mode. Many have also criticized the wild direction of the stories, with Black Ops 7 being labeled as an absolute mess.
Modern Warfare 4 receiving such praise feels like a fresh revival for the series, but a better example will come in a few days when the game receives its full release on October 23, 2026. At that point, the user score may stay the same, or it may plummet as more people get their hands on the game.
