Like it or not, prices of consoles have gone up, and it is largely due to the advancement of AI. Everything has become more expensive, with the PS5 seeing a leap in cost from $500 to $600. The Xbox Series S/X has also seen a rather large price increase, making gaming a much more costly hobby. The cost of consoles is only expected to increase, which isn’t a good sign for the upcoming PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix, which are both supposedly set to hit the market in 2027.
Many have already shared their disgust at the idea of purchasing a console for over $1,000, which is what many have estimated the next generation of consoles to be marketed at. If this price comes to fruition, many users will most likely not upgrade, especially since the technological leap won’t be very great. Of course, nothing about the next generation of consoles has been seen, but Sony has addressed how it plans on combatting the rising costs when the PS6 does inevitably hit the market.
Sony Releases Statement About PS6 Price
The potential price that many think the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix will end up being is around $1,000 to $1,100. This is a massive leap from the current generation of consoles, which sell for around $600, unless you are getting the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will cost you around $900.
In a recent investor Q&A, Sony finally addressed the PS6 and its plan for the company’s hardware profitability. Historically, consoles have been sold at a loss, as you need the console to play the software. As such, the company makes up the difference by selling games. Of course, as the cost of building the console goes up, the price it is sold for must also go up, and as the expenses pile up, profitability inevitably decreases.
As per the transcript of the Q&A via VGC, Sony stated, “As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach. We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing.”
This is the first statement Sony has made regarding the price of the PS6, and it reflects that console prices are going to be on the rise. The day of the $500 console is behind us, and like it or not, we must all be prepared for that.
