Spyro the Dragon hasn’t had a brand new console adventure since 2008 in the form of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. In 2018, we got the Reignited Trilogy, which included remakes of the original 3 Spyro games for the PlayStation. Today, Xbox announced that Spyro is getting a brand new adventure titled Spyro: A Realm Beyond.
Welcome Back, Spyro!
A Realm Beyond was teased during the Xbox Summer Showcase and will launch in 2027 on all major consoles and the PC. This title looks to go beyond the typical formula when referring to previous Spyro games. It was revealed in an interview with Paul Yan, the head of Toys for Bob, via an Xbox Wire Blog post that Spyro will experience the freedom of true dragon flight.
“For now, I can tell you that our biggest ambition in Spyro: A Realm Beyond is to give the player the freedom and fantasy of dragon flight – to be able to take the skies at a moment’s notice and make interesting and active decisions to flow through the spaces as you charge on the ground and now soar through the air. This is such a significant addition to the game, and we’ve built a whole world around that promise.”
Additionally, the trailer’s tone was brought up as somewhat of a talking point. Yan was asked about the game’s main antagonist and how this title feels a bit more grown-up than previous entries. Yan replied, “You may have noticed that we are introducing the threat of a new antagonist in this story, and his presence will raise the stakes. He will challenge Spyro’s abilities and push him to new emotional depths that will see Spyro grow as a hero.”
A New Adventure For an Old Hero
Spyro: A Realm Beyond looks to be the title many Spyro fans have been waiting for. Toys for Bob has a proven track record in the 3D platforming space and clearly understands the expectations that longtime fans have for Spyro. Sadly, we have to wait just a bit longer to hear more about what this game entails, as it is expected to drop sometime in the spring of 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and the PlayStation 5.
