The recent Helldivers 2 fiasco has had players up in arms. While many have pointed out that it was stated that a PSN account was required to play the game, players either overlooked the statement or didn’t know about it. To make matters worse, Helldivers 2 was able to be bought and played in games where a PSN account can’t be made. This led to many playing the game who normally wouldn’t be able to, a positive for the community as more players were able to join.
The good will of Sony and Arrowhead eventually came to an end when Sony decided it was time to make Arrowhead implement the account requirement. Now, the game has been pulled off the Steam store in countries where it shouldn’t have been sold and the company is issuing refunds for all those who ask based on the requirement. If all of this wasn’t enough, the CEO of Arrowhead recently shared some news. It appears that Arrowhead knew about the requirement “for about six months before launch.”
CEO Johan Pilestedt took to his X account to share the information with Helldivers 2 fans by saying “I am not blameless in all of this. It was my decision to disable account linking at launch so that players could play the game.” He also stated that he did not “ensure players were aware of the requirement.”
While many are still upset, they respect the CEO for having the courage to admit where he went wrong. After being posted to Reddit by Toughstorm, one commented, “Gotta respect dude’s moral courage to take responsibility like that.” Another user commented, “Pretty sure the guy is shellshocked at this point. He made a small mistake during the hectic launch days and it had colossal consequences.” Many respect Pilestedt for coming forward and are still rightfully blaming Sony for setting this as a requirement. In the future, actions like this should be made more clear to the players so that they can plan their next move.
