Overwatch 2 fans believe a certain character who has been introduced in the past will be made playable at the beginning of Season 8. Season 6 hasn’t ended yet, but they are looking for any hints that could point to Mauga making his presence known in the game as a new Tank hero.
All of the Mauga speculation stems from the new Samoa map that was recently revealed and will be playable when Season 7 starts on October 10. The new map features a room believed to belong to the brutish character since it features a red dress shirt with birds on it that the character has been seen wearing and a container of biohazardous chemicals. Mauga is still very involved and committed to Talon’s cause in the lore, so his coming to the game soon after the Null Sector attacks in Season 6 could fit.
This isn’t just baseless fan hoping, though. Earlier this year, the Antarctic Peninsula map was brought to Overwatch 2, featuring posters for Peru and Samoa. In Season 6, Illari, a Peruvian character, was brought to the game. The fact that we know Mauga is from Samoa, we know that Season 8 will bring a new Tank, and the room looking to be his does seem to strongly hint at Mauga being the new hero.
Of course, there are always opportunities for Blizzard to pull a bait-and-switch, but we would guess that Mauga is a safe bet for now. He has been one of the most anticipated characters for a long time, and putting him in the game alongside Baptiste could introduce some interesting hero interactions even without knowing how he will play. All we know about his combat prowess is he is a heavy assault character, so he could play similarly to the larger AI Talon enemies we have seen in past events like Retribution. Mauga would be a perfect announcement for the upcoming BlizzCon show. If you want to meet Mauga, you can read about Baptiste’s interaction with him in the What You Left Behind short story.
