After saying that he was considering retirement a year ago, Jim Carrey has decided to once again take on the role of Dr. Eggman (real name: Robotnik) in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, according to Variety. He will be playing the blue hedgehog’s main antagonist alongside Shadow the Hedgehog, as teased in the post-credits scene of the second movie.
At the conclusion of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, Eggman fell from his giant robot after being toppled by Super Sonic. Falling from a height that large would normally kill a man, but we are talking about video game and movie logic here. No one found a body, so Robotnik obviously survived. This does make us wonder about the future of the character if there were to be a fourth movie, though. At the age of 62, Jim Carrey has given us countless memorable performances, but if he wants to hang it up, how much longer will he keep playing Eggman?
No details were given as to why Carrey decided to hold off on retirement, but we are happy to see him commit to one more movie. These movies have done a very good job of introducing exciting and heartwarming stories between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and now that we know Shadow is being added (and presumably Rouge the Bat), our excitement is at an all-time high.
We grew up loving Jim Carrey movies and think he has done a brilliant job of playing a more zany version of Eggman than you would typically expect. We love this interpretation of the character and are always happy to see more Jim Carrey while we can. With Shadow coming in, we expect tons of Sonic Adventure 2 references and a really interesting dynamic between Eggman and his family’s role in Shadow’s creation.
