Some might say that the market is oversaturated with hero shooters. After all, we have Overwatch 2, Team Fortress 2, Apex Legends, Deadlock, Paladins, and Fragpunk. Even recently, games like Marvel Rivals have exploded onto the scene and had some major success. Unfortunately, for all of these successful hero shooters, some don’t make it, and it appears as though Highguard will be one of those that just don’t make the cut, because not even a week after its launch, the game is already losing a lot of players. Some are even labeling it Concord 2.0.
Highguard Labeled Concord 2.0 As Player Count Drops
Highguard launched on January 26, which was five days ago. The day it launched, it reached a peak of 97,249 players, and since then, the player count has dropped to around 15,000. Most days, the game is scraping by with around 8,000 players, and has seen a small increase in player count thanks to the 5v5 player game mode that was added.
Many have drawn comparisons to Concord, which was released back in August 2024 and was shut down 11 days later. While the player count may be dropping, Highguard is performing much better than Concord did, with Concord seeing only around 700 players at its peak.
Still, it has been only five days since Highguard, a free-to-play game, was released to the public, and since then, the player count has dropped by approximately 85%. Currently, the game has a mixed rating on Steam, with almost 25,000 reviews. Of these, around 42% are positive, with a slight majority being negative. This is far from what many expected after the game was praised at The Game Awards by Geoff Keighley.
Developer Wildlight Entertainment has stated that it plans on continuously updating Highguard throughout the next year, and has already revealed a content roadmap for the game. The roadmap shows that the team plans on adding more characters, weapons, bases, tools, and more over the next year, with each month offering something for those who choose to stick around.
