Today’s Nintendo Direct showed off more of the upcoming Star Fox remake, as we continually approach its June 25 release date. While the trailer didn’t really surprise anyone with what was shown in the game, we now know that Velan Studios is the development team bringing back the Star Fox crew on the Nintendo Switch 2.
This is a bit of a surprise, given that Nintendo has taken the approach lately of not revealing what development teams are working on games until players find out in the end credits.
Velan Studios is Making the New Star Fox
Alongside the above post, Velan says that Star Fox runs at 60 fps and is powered by its in-house Viper Engine. While some people online have been lukewarm at best to the more real-life design of the crew, the engine does look to be bringing a great deal of fidelity to the series, which isn’t necessarily surprising, given how the last entry, Star Fox Zero, came out on the Wii U a decade ago.
If you are unfamiliar with Velan Studios, they are probably best known for being the makers of Knockout City, a dodgeball arena game that, unfortunately, was shut down two years after its release. While the game couldn’t sustain a steadfast community like so many other live-service games, it was a lot of fun.
Outside of that, Velan’s most recent release is Midnight Murder Club, a PlayStation console exclusive that has friends hunting each other in a dark mansion, which is also a lot of fun as a small title. This isn’t even the studios’ first time working with Nintendo, as they made Mario Kart: Home Circuit, the spin-off title where you control a real-world Mario Kart toy in your living room.
The Star Fox remake may have a questionable design to its cast, but overall, the game so far looks to be a good remake of the series’ Nintendo 64 entry, though it’s not taking many chances outside of the realistic animal looks.
