The price tag for the Steam Machine has been kept well under wraps since its initial reveal in 2025. Given all that has happened in the world since, the world of technology has seen an astronomical spike in RAM prices, and many expected this to be reflected in this console’s price. Today, Valve officially revealed the price of admission, which could turn many casual gamers away even before it hits shelves.
A Steep Price to Pay
Valve recently revealed via the Steam storefront that the Steam Machine will have a wide range of options available at launch. The base model with 512GB of storage will cost you about $1,049, which is in line with what Valve originally stated as far as how they wanted to price this console competitively with other gaming PCs.
But this price tag suddenly creeps up to levels that seem well beyond what anyone is willing to pay for a console nowadays. When looking at the 2TB model, buyers can expect a final price of $1,349; if you choose to bundle it with a controller, you’ll be sitting at a staggering $1,428 when all is said and done.
A Box of Wonders
The Steam Machine now costs around $400-$450 more than an Xbox Series X or a PlayStation 5, depending on your console gaming preferences. This immediately pushes the Steam Machine out of the realm of reality for most console gamers and could be very hard to recommend to a casual audience. But looking at a crowd who may be looking at an entry-level gaming PC, this may be a device worth picking up.
The $1049 price tag is certainly a shell shock at first glance, but serves as the precursor to what future home gaming consoles could be priced at or around. Valve has stuck true to their word when talking about keeping the price competitive with gaming PCs, and given how much individual PC parts cost in 2026, the Steam Machine suddenly looks like a no-brainer to those looking to make the jump to the world of PC gaming.
