Chocobos are the most iconic creature in Final Fantasy. They come in all shapes and sizes from tiny to fat and different colors like yellow, blue, and red. Thanks to this creature being your main mount, you might be wondering how to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. After all, there is a trick to being a good Chocobo handler.

There’s a lot to do in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This retelling of the original story is a massive undertaking and you will need all the help you can get in it. Be sure you know how to change party leaders and change up your party so you are prepared for anything. Here is how to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

How to unlock Chocobos in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Chocobos are unlocked very early on in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. During Chapter 2, you will go to Bill’s Chocobo Ranch. Here, Billy will give you the task of hunting down a Chocobo named Piko who ran off. Completing this little main story quest will get you Chocobos as well as free riding lessons from Billy.

Later in the game, you will need to complete additional minigames to catch a new Chocobo. This happens in each area beyond the Grasslands. Similar to catching Piko, you need to sneak around and wrangle the Chocobo to unlock it for the area. For instance, in Junon, you need to capture Belle – a hearty mountain Chocobo.

How to ride a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – All controls

In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you can summon your Chocobo with your Chocobo Whistle by pressing R1 on your controller. During the demo, you automatically are given this item but we assume you will get it much earlier in the story during the full release. When your Chocobo arrives, simply walk up to it and you will automatically start riding it. While on your Chocobo, you will have different controls than when you walking around. The following are the controls for the Chocobo:

Button commandAction
R1Mount / Dismount / Have Chocobo wait (if dismounted)

After you dismount from your Chocobo, it will follow you around for a short while before disappearing unless you tell it to wait. While waiting, it will remain in the spot until you return or call it to a new location. While riding your Chocobo, you can pick up items like normal by pressing the triangle button.

How to find treasure with your Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

To find treasure with your Chocobo, press up on the D-Pad. This will tell your Chocobo to sniff out treasure. If there is any nearby, your Chocobo will point you in the direction of it. If not, it will tell you that “your Chocobo doesn’t sense anything nearby.”

When you reach the location of the treasure, press down on the D-Pad to tell your Chocobo to scour the area. This will cause it to dig up the treasure in the area as long as you are standing over it. You can then collect the treasure.

How to get new gear for your Chocobo in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

You can purchase new gear from trading shops in exchange for Golden Plumes. These shops can be found scattered about the world. If you played the demo, you can find one of these shops outside of Junon. Items that you purchase from these shops can alter your Chocobo’s look with different armor. You can get the Golden Plumes required for purchasing these items by repairing Chocobo Stops.

Changing Chocobo Gear

With the new gear you purchased, you can access barns to change the look of your Chocobo. Walk up to the Chocobo sign and interact with it to access the menu. In this new menu, you can choose different helmets, breastplates, and greaves to make your Chocobo look as menacing or as cute as you want.
