Mario Kart inspired indie racer made in five hours

When you think of racing video games, perhaps the one the races to the top of your mind is the Mario Kart series. Nintendo and a team of top-notch developers spent one year creating Mario Kart 64 back in 1995. Nearly 30 years later, one developer spent a lot less time making a racing game based on the Nintendo 64 release.

(Cue screeching tire noises)

Game developer Mateo Covic, or Zoroarts on X, posted a look at the game and it’s gaining momentum. The short video shows a kart racing on a dirt track surrounded by a forest. It all came about after Covic was challenged by his brother to make a racing game by himself in a single day. Well, five hours later, he completed the challenge and released the footage online on LinkedIn. The result is just a few hours of development and 70 lines of code in total.

🚨Game Announcement🚨

Played a lot of Mario Kart with my Brother and he gave me the Challenge to develope a racing game in ONE DAY!

5 hours in Development and this is my Result🙂

If this post gets 500 likes, I will drop a free version!#Indiegame #gamedev #indiedev #solodev pic.twitter.com/eacEhfY7T3

The track in the video mirrors Mario Kart circuits and even has shortcuts. The kart in particular is from Covic’s other solo developed game Makis Adventure.

Covic stated he would release a free version of the game on itch.io if the post got 500 likes. However, there will be a free version nonetheless it seems, as Covic will add a free version no matter what. Included will be local and online multiplayer and a home menu. Graphics will be improved as well when it actually releases.

Perhaps the game will one day be posted to Steam as well with consoles in the future. It also does not have an official name either. We reached out to see what the name could be. Covic said it could potentially be called Makis Racing Adventure.

For now, it’s great to see an indie developer creating a game they’re passionate about. It came from a simple challenge to create and when an artist puts their mind to something, it’s difficult to slow down and hit the brakes.
