Avowed is Obsidian Entertainment’s third installment in the Pillars of Eternity universe and we’ve learned a major update to it. When the game was originally announced it was going to be first-person viewpoint only. Well, the most recent trailer and gameplay shows that is no longer the case. Third-person gameplay is a feature and fans, and myself, are thrilled. Or should I say awowed!
In the trailer shown during the Xbox Showcase there is a blink and you miss it scene showing third-person footage. Then the next day on Xbox Wire, Game Director Carrie Patel confirmed the third-person viewpoint. On top of that, the official Avowed social media account posted it was happening.
It’s been nearly a year to the day we got the first footage of Avowed. Back then it was again only going to be first-person. Which is an odd choice considering you make a fully customized character. What would the point be if you couldn’t then see them fighting and exploring the map? Well, fans on Reddit agree.
We adventured over to the r/avowed posts to see what people had to say. One user said they had lost hope on it ever having the option, while another responded by saying the viewpoint is a major reason they want to play the game.
This led to talk of games with both a first and third-person point of view and how it impacts immersion. If you’re someone who enjoys playing a game in first-person to feel like that person, switching to an over the shoulder view could take you out of it. However, combat in third-person can be quite challenging, especially in games such as Skyrim. Users commented on the debate with one saying, they constantly switch between viewpoints depending on certain situations. They prefer exploring and adventuring in third-person, and it makes sense. You get to see more of the world and your character. While first-person can provide a more streamline and quicker option when it comes to fighting.
I covered the gameplay reveal trailer on our YouTube channel. In the video, I talk about how the game was meant to be first-person only, but now that it’s no longer the case, I’ll have to get a new one posted to talk about it. It’s a great option to have in games and I’m stoked it’s being put in Avowed.
What do you think about first-person and third-person viewpoints?
