Chained Echoes is getting review bombed, but no one knows why

The one-man indie title Chained Echoes released to fantastic reviews, but months after its launch, it’s getting swarmed with negative reviews on Metacritic with no clear reason why. When the game came out in December of 2022, players couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. Throughout the six months Chained Echoes has been available, reviews have been nothing but positive for the game. Now, however, developer Deck13 reports people have been giving the game poor reviews.

Head of Product Michael Hoss posted a series of tweets showing the negative reviews on Metacritic. In the post, Hoss included several pictures showing review scores, with the lowest being 5.2 across the PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game, with only the Xbox version curiously untouched. This could be due to the game being on Xbox Game Pass, but without knowing actual details or seeing written reviews, there’s no reason for the low scores.

Now it happened to us. @ChainedEchoes has been review bombed on Metacritic. Just plain ratings, no reviews. No reasons. We don't know why, it just happened.

Didn't @metacritic want to stop this nonsense? Guess only for AAA games. #indiedev #metacritic #gamedev pic.twitter.com/Qit6pusT5F

Hoss called out Metacritic for not doing anything about review bombing. While the site has attempted to prevent negative scores in the past, it seems some work still needs to be done to ensure it no longer happens. According to Hoss, it’s believed the reason is due to the game not being available in specific regions or not having a specific language.

Hoss took the sudden shift in scores as a positive by saying Chained Echoes’ popularity and fan-following, and coincidental review bombing, means it’s doing rather well for itself.
