After getting out of the hellfire that is Embracer Group, it sounds like Saber Interactive is actively picking up their work on the Star Wars: KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) remake. In an interview with IGN, Saber’s CEO Matthew Karch said it is “alive and well.” While acknowledging that the game has had its fair share of negative times in the news, the developer is working on making the best game possible.
Announced in 2021, the Star Wars: KOTOR remake was initially set to be published by Aspyr. They have a recent history of making ports of older Star Wars games to current hardware, but each release lacked many (if any) quality updates. For example, they released the much-maligned Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection earlier this year. It was later reported that Embracer had moved the project to Saber Interactive, but after a while, only two people were working on the project.
Speaking speculatively, we would suggest that Saber Interactive splitting away from Embracer Group was the best thing to happen for the developers and this project. After a $2 billion partnership with Saudi Arabia fell through, the publisher has been canceling projects, laying off their workforce, and outright closing studios. Given how quiet the Star Wars: KOTOR remake was, we would imagine that was sooner or later going to be on the chopping block as well.
No other concrete updates on the Star Wars: KOTOR remake have been given, but following a string of very discouraging reports since the game’s reveal, we would say this is a positive. Don’t expect it to come out any time soon, but if you were a fan of the original Xbox exclusive, you should expect updates on the new PS5 exclusive in the coming years.
