The original PlayStation was a landmark console for many reasons, but one of the most prominent was its library of memorable classics. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and countless others made their start on Sony’s original console and are favorably remembered all these years later. Even some smaller stars from those days get brought up now and then. That’s the case with the return of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which, out of nowhere, had a new remaster revealed with the trailer below.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is a 3D platformer that was released in 1997 for the PS1. In it, you play as Croc, a young green crocodile who goes around trying to save the Gobbos, a race of small furry creatures with big eyes who adopted and raised Croc. Argonaut Games, the developer who made the original, is actually back from the dead after being closed down in 2004. We imagine that there is next to none of the original staff returning for the remaster, but hopefully, some fans of the original are putting some love into the re-release.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos history

Generally, the first Croc game got a pretty good reception back when it first came out, though it wasn’t necessarily seen as something groundbreaking or particularly special. It borrows a lot of elements from games that came before it, like Tomb Raider, Super Mario 64, and even Gex. It will be interesting to see how well these borrowed ideas are accepted nowadays. Originally, it was pitched as a Yoshi game to Nintendo, but they turned that down to instead make Yoshi’s Story.

With so many games from the 90s and 00s slowly being brought back, we are glad to see Croc: Legend of the Gobbos get a second chance at life. If you played this game as a kid, you’ll likely be drawn back to play it again on current hardware. It’s a remaster, not a remake, so don’t expect many advancements outside of a visual bump, but it could be a good chance to show your kids something from your childhood.
