A Donkey Kong movie appears to be in the very early stages from Nintendo and Universal according to a public copyright filing. Both companies (or parties) have their names on the project titled “Untitled Donkey Kong Project ;Motion picture,” which is about as ironclad as you can get. The copyright appears to have been filed in May.
It would stand to reason that Seth Rogen will be returning as the voice of Donkey Kong following his work in the original Super Mario Bros. Movie. While we don’t know if he also will be in the upcoming sequel to that movie, we would be willing to guess that Nintendo and Universal may want to focus on other characters in that movie like Yoshi and potentially others like Wario or Daisy. If that is the case, a fully focused DK movie focusing on the Kongs makes sense.
With a Donkey Kong movie on the way, you can also expect Fred Armisen to also return as Cranky Kong, who was the ruler of the Kong Kingdom in the first Mario movie. We also saw Diddy, Dixie, and Chunky for brief moments in that movie, but while Dixie and Chunky didn’t have a voice, Diddy’s very short voice role was played by Eric Bauza, who has so many voices to mention here, but is best currently known for being the current voice for Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig in Looney Tunes. With a talent like that, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him retained for a full movie as Donkey Kong’s sidekick.
Outside of who all would be playing the other various Kongs, we have just one big question. Who is the antagonist? While Nintendo doesn’t like to bring him up too much, the only choice in our mind is King K. Rool. As for who could voice the royal crocodile, there could be a large swath of potential suitors.
