How Many Players is Grain Rot?

how many players is grain rot

Fresh off its latest update, hot new indie horror extraction game Grain Rot has been steadily growing in popularity, with more and more players customizing their Outposts and diving into the Deep Layers. Fans who asked about how many players Lethal Company allowed might want to check this game out too!

But for all the game teaches you, one thing it doesn’t make clear is whether or not its online multiplayer has a player limit. Thankfully, our team here at Game Sandwich has the answer for you. Learn here just how many players is Grain Rot.

Out at the Outpost

When you first launch Grain Rot, you’ll be prompted to choose whether to start a new game or to join an existing one. Depending on whether or not you want to host, you’ll need to pick one option or the other. Once you do, you’ll be treated to a quick cutscene of your character just barely finding shelter at the home of two other small wooden robots named Biggie and Murch. Better get used to them, because you’ll be seeing them a lot.

Grain Rot NPCs
Biggie and Murch are the first friends you’ll make while surviving out in the burning hot wastes.

After your introduction to the game ends, if you’re hosting the game, you can invite your friends into your lobby via a pile of letters on the desk near the entrance. Send your pals an invite, and soon your Outpost will be full of Scrappies ready to get building and collecting. As for how many players Grain Rot lets you invite? As far as we can tell, there doesn’t seem to be a player limit! We at one point had a lobby of 8 players all working together to decorate our outpost and explore the Deep Layers, and it seemed like the game was still allowing us to invite more. If there’s a hard upper limit, you’ll need a real big group of friends to hit it.

That said, there might be one issue that could limit how many players Grain Rot will let you play with. It revolves around one of the game’s central mechanics, and if you’re not ready for it and pull together too big of a group, you might be caught off guard and end up leaving some sad friends behind.

Deep Layer Lockout

When your group of Scrappies is ready to head down into the Deep Layers, you’ll need to get everyone interested in taking a dive into the Cursed Elevator. This haunted ride drops you deep into the randomly generated abyss below the Outpost known as the Deep Layers, where you’ll find creepy monsters, radioactive rot, and of course, plenty of loot to make the risk worthwhile. However, there’s a catch with the elevator that could affect how many players Grain Rot lets you take with you.

Grain Rot Cursed Elevator
The Cursed Elevator might be the real limit on how many players Grain Rot is.

In Grain Rot, everyone’s character has collision, which means no walking through your pals when you’re exploring the tight corridors of the Deep Layers, decorating a room, or, most importantly, crowding into the Cursed Elevator. With a group of eight, we were so tightly packed into the elevator that it was hard for the players closest to the button to get out, and the last few in had to squeeze. With a big enough group, you might find out that the answer to “How many players is Grain Rot?” ends up being “how many people can you shove into the Cursed Elevator?” Thankfully, those left behind on a Deep Layer dive can stay back at the outpost and decorate, but if you want to brave the depths with friends or chase rewards, you’ll have to get pretty good at cramming everyone into the Cursed Elevator together.

And that’s our guide on how many players is Grain Rot!
