Crossplay is undoubtedly a great feature to have in online games these days. For so many years, if your friends were playing on a different platform, you had no chance to play any games with them. Nowadays, Call of Duty is no longer seen as a community that gates people off from playing with their friends. Regardless of if you’re playing on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, you can team up with your usual squad. However, Modern Warfare 3 has run into a few issues with this. Here is how to fix MW3 crossplay not working.

How to fix the “Join Failed Because You Are on a Different Version” crossplay error in MW3

If you are getting an error message when trying to join friends that says, “Join failed because you are on a different version,’ then you need to know how to fix MW3 crossplay not working. Both you and your friends’ first step should be completely closing out of the game and checking for updates. If your console or launcher isn’t showing anything, start up the game again, and it might hit a point where it says “update requires restart” before rebooting itself. In most situations, particularly if one of you started the game out of Xbox’s Quick Resume feature, that should take care of your problem.

If an update and restart haven’t helped you are your friends play together, you should check and make sure that online services are running smoothly. Below are links where you can check server status for Call of Duty and various platforms.

  • Call of Duty Server Status
  • PlayStation
  • Xbox
  • Battle.net Customer Service X page

If none of the above have helped you, we recommend a full reboot of your console or PC and to try contacting Activision Support.
