Spellcasters Chronicles, the MOBA-inspired multiplayer game by Quantic Dream, is being shut down on June 19, when all development will end, and the servers will cease to work. The next month will be the final chance for anyone to hop into the arena as one of the game’s flying magic casters. If you have spent any money on the game during its early access period, you can request a full refund, which will be detailed in the near future.
Quantic Dream posted the announcement, saying that the team will be “reorganized” and, hopefully, mostly reassigned to other projects currently in development. This game being shut down is not expected to negatively affect Star Wars Eclipse, which was announced in 2021 before development fully began on it.
Spellcasters Chronicles Shuts Down in June
Spellcasters Chronicles being shut down before it even fully launches is the result of yet another live service game that was unable to generate and keep a large crowd continually coming back to play it. It entered early access on February 26 with an all-time peak of 888 players. Since then, the player base quickly fell off, with the game struggling to get over 50 players at a time over the last month.
I played Spellcasters Chronicles back in its closed beta, and found the game to be surprisingly fun. Flying around and using hero shooter-like abilities while summoning your armies was something that was engaging, and I particularly enjoyed bringing in a titan to wipe away everything in its path. Going in, my expectations were not high, considering that Quantic Dream is known for its single-player narrative games. This was definitely a step in a very different direction, and at the end of the day, that may have been the game’s downfall. It was good, but not a world-changing experience that would make anyone choose it over games like Fortnite, League of Legends, or Overwatch.
