In a move no one could have predicted, Critical Role is playing a tabletop one-shot episode set in Hyrule and it’s being sponsored by Nintendo. There are many layers to how this came to be but the most important thing to take away from it is: it’s real. A bunch of nerdy ass voice actors are going to be exploring Hyrule in a way no one has ever done, officially.
The details are light as to what this adventure will be about but we know who the players are. The one-shot game inspired by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom includes Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Robbie Daymond, Omar Najam, Emily Axford, and the voice of Ganondorf himself, Matthew Mercer.
Mercer is the DM, but secretly may be playing Ganondorf in the episode as well. It’s more than likely his role in the recent release is a major part of how this whole thing came about, and we can’t wait to see what an official TTRPG adventure in Hyrule will look like. It’s like what I imagine reading a Zelda fanfic feels like but you get to experience it all unfold first hand.
The episode will air Tuesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. PST on Critical Role’s official Twitch and YouTube channels.
