At one point, there was supposedly an animated series adaptation of Destiny being worked on. The show was reportedly going to stream exclusively on Netflix. Years after Bungie discussed expanding the Destiny universe into other media, there has been little to no traction made at all, and many fans are starting to think it will never happen.
The news of a canceled Destiny animated series on Netflix comes from Forbes writer Paul Tassi, who revealed he had been sitting on that news for a long time on his personal YouTube channel. His discussion on the project starts just after the four-minute mark in the video above.
From what Tassi is saying about what he heard about the Destiny animated series, the show was in very early talks between Bungie and Netflix before Sony acquired the developer. That deal happened in 2022, so you can expect those talks to have happened much sooner than that. Likely in 2021, maybe even before that.
All of this discussion comes about because of the recent success of the Fallout series on Amazon Prime. In his video, Tassi likens the situation surrounding that project a lot to HBO’s The Last of Us, but in the same way, he says he doesn’t think Destiny can expect anything like that any time soon. He cites the current turmoil that the series seems to be under following Bungie layoffs and how those other series had Neil Druckmann and Todd Howard heavily involved. Destiny doesn’t really have a figurehead like that to lead the ship on content outside of the game.
It’s important to note that just because Tassi says he doesn’t think a Destiny animated series is currently happening doesn’t mean that it really isn’t. His logic is sound, but Sony does own Crunchyroll, which is probably the largest distributor of anime currently. Something could be in the works, but we don’t recommend getting your hopes up.
