In an official announcement released today by IGN and Nightmare Forge Studios, there is now a trailer showing off the four-player survival horror title Infestation 88. Set in 1988, this title is “A co-op horror in which you’re an exterminator treating sinister infestations caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends.” The trailer shows exterminators running for their lives while trying to deal with the sinister infection.
If you haven’t heard, the original version of Mickey Mouse has officially entered the public domain. This means that fans of the old Steamboat Willy character can use it however they want for creative expression. For Nightmare Forge Studios, this means breathing life into a new horror title called Infestation 88. Can you and your friends survive against this maniac of a mouse?
This game aims to fuse nostalgia with terror and it has succeeded as far as we can tell. Few things are as terrifying as seeing an icon of animation hunting you down in the dark.
Nightmare Forge Studios has promised a few things out of this game on its official Steam Page. These include:
- Private and public lobbies
- Proximity and global voice chat
- Character creation
- Scaling enemy behavior
In each mission, your task is to clear out the infestation. It may sound simple but each level contains a distinct classic character or urban legend that you must deal with. If you and your friends can eradicate that fiend and all the nests, you win.
While we know that a version of Mickey Mouse is in the game, it’s the other “classic characters” that pique our interest. Could this mean that characters such as Pete or Goofy could also be in the game? Winnie the Pooh previously entered the public domain. Perhaps a crazed killer bear similar to that in Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will be seen.
