The Overwatch 2 X account was taken over today by “Mauga” as a way to start building up hype before the new hero goes live in the game on December 5 with the start of Season 8. The character held an AMA (Ask Mauga Anything) that included a look at his upcoming battle pass skin, some insight into how he feels about things (he wants more Lucio tracks to weightlift to), and this was all finished off with a new animated short that showed him going into a Talon mission alongside Reaper and Sombra.
We are big fans of Overwatch’s lore, so anytime a new short is out, we love to watch it and find connections to the larger world. In this short, Doomfist sends the trio of Mauga, Sombra, and Reaper to the crashed Null Sector ship that invaded Gothenburg. You can play that mission in Overwatch 2 now if you have purchased it. The entire time, we are focused on Sombra as she tries to take data from the ship for Talon so they can create some new kind of “power thingy,” as Mauga describes it. This is the first time we can recall Talon being connected to a new power source that they are trying to develop, so look out for more information on that in the future.
The animated short starts out focusing on Mauga’s wild side, with his loose-cannon nature seemingly ruining the mission for Sombra and Reaper. By the end, we see just how scarily clever Mauga can be, with how he prevented a distress signal from being sent out and gathered the ship’s power core to give to Doomfist. Surprisingly, though, Mauga appears to abandon Talon, similarly to how Baptiste has in the past. It will be interesting to see how that affects their dynamic going forward.
This animated short is further proof to us that Overwatch needs a consistent animated series, although it still appears that might never happen. The video posted on X does give us a good look at the character in action and does a good job of getting us more excited for him to be playable again next week.
