As of May 1, Nintendo and Patricia Summerset — the voice of Princess Zelda in Breath of the Wild — confirmed that she will be reprising her role as the Hyrule royal in Tears of the Kingdom. Fans quite enjoyed Summersett’s portrayal of Zelda in Breath of the Wild as a more scholarly noble trying to thwart Calamity Ganon. With this studious Princess Zelda by his side, Link’s journey in Breath of the Wild wasn’t a lonely one. As Princess Zelda’s voice actress, Patricia Summersett solidified Zelda as a charming and warm-hearted ally.
Given Summersett’s involvement, it implies that Tears of the Kingdom will have closer ties to its predecessor game than most Legend of Zelda titles. Yes, all Legend of Zelda games occur in the same universe — Ganon, Zelda, and Link keep reincarnating over and over again to threaten Hyrule and then save it, respectively. That backbone lore has been the major tie between games for most of the franchise. But with the popularity of Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom being softly dubbed “BOTW 2” by many players, these two games might have a lot more in common than most. This is especially likely given the very similar art directions and the fact that both share the same map. Summersett’s reprisal is more proof that Tears of the Kingdom is much more a direct sequel than most LoZ titles.
But who is Patricia Summersett?
Patricia Summersett has acted across the industry, from being the Consoler in Mother!, appearing as a guest in a dozen TV shows, and acting as background voices in Horizon Zero West. However, her most major role to date was acting as Princess Zelda in Breath of The Wild. It’s no surprise she’s excited to return to the role again in Tears of the Kingdom.
