Overwatch is set to begin a new chapter with the launch of The Reign of Talon, and among many of the new things being added this year is a new layer to the role passives. This new layer is called sub-roles, and will add a little more variation to your heroes that could give you a slight advantage in certain situations. Here is what you need to know about sub-roles in Overwatch.

What Are Overwatch Sub-Roles?

In the past, all heroes within a role in Overwatch shared the same passive, like tanks not being knocked back as easily, or supports starting their health regeneration quickly. With sub-roles, certain sections of the main three roles are being sectioned off for these small passive abilities. Tanks and supports both have three, while damage have four categories.

What Are the New Sub-Role Passives in Overwatch?

Here is a list of all sub-roles and what heroes on the Overwatch roster get what passive from their sub-role.

Tanks

  • Bruiser – Reduced incoming critical damage, faster movement speed when below 50% health.
    • Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, and Zarya
  • Initiator – Staying airborne lightly heals you.
    • D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, and Wrecking Ball
  • Stalwart – Reduces knockbacks and slows received.
    • Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, and Sigma

Damage

  • Sharpshooter – Critical hits reduce your movement ability cooldowns.
    • Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, and Widowmaker
  • Flanker – Health packs restore more health.
    • Anran, Genji, Reaper, Tracer, Vendetta, and Venture
  • Specialist – Eliminating an enemy briefly increases your reload speed.
    • Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, and Torbjorn
  • Recon – You detect enemies below half health through walls after damaging them.
    • Echo, Freja, Pharah, and Sombra

Supports

  • Tactician – You can gain excess ultimate charge which carries over after using your ultimate ability.
    • Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lucio, and Zenyatta
  • Medic – Healing allies with your weapon also heals you.
    • Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, and Moira
  • Survivor – Using a movement ability activates passive health regeneration.
    • Brigitte, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, and Wuyang
