Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios recently revealed that the new Backyard Baseball game they’ve been teasing for some time now will launch in July.
Play Ball!
A debut trailer for the Backyard Baseball game debuted at IGN Fan Fest this past Thursday. While it was mostly animated and adopted the same art style as prior entries, the tail end of this trailer shifted to a 3D art style that we can assume is the new stylistic direction this franchise is headed in.
The game’s Steam page showcases screenshots of gameplay that look on brand when compared to prior entries. Its description, on the other hand, reveals four gameplay modes, 11 remastered stadiums, 24 teams, and 30 characters you could pick from. And to the relief of many, the page also confirms that no microtransactions will be present in this rendition of Backyard Baseball.
Back to the Bases
The Backyard Sports franchise had lain dormant for many years until Playground Productions secured rights to the IP and revived it in 2024. Upon its revival, classic games came to the PC, which stayed true to the original Humongous Entertainment games. This year, we’ve seen a wide range of original content, which includes an animated special.
Growing up in the prime era of Backyard Baseball, it’s nice to see this franchise get all the TLC that it deserves. What’s even more promising is this shift to a more modern 3D art style that could give this game new life with modern audiences. And we’ve been given plenty of time to warm up to take the mound because Backyard Baseball is looking to release for PC, Mac, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch platforms on July 9th.
