Star Fox fans around the world have been waiting for a brand new game since Star Fox Zero on the Wii U. Over recent months, fans have seen an uptick in rumors that a brand new game was in the works, but nothing concrete was confirmed. And in true Nintendo fashion, an unannounced Nintendo Direct was held on May 6th, where we not only got the news that a new Star Fox game is indeed real, but it’s releasing next month.
Do a Barrel Roll!

To the surprise of many, Star Fox 64 will serve as the foundation for this new game, as Nintendo wanted to give that classic Star Fox feel with all the modern graphics and quality of life improvements. The change that has spawned the most banter online is the brand new redesigns for the whole Star Fox ensemble. This time around, Nintendo opted to take a more realistic approach with its characters, and based on the fan reception online, it has people split, but best of all, it spawned some amazing memes.
As far as controls go, this title will allow users to use the Switch 2’s mouse controls and split the Joy-Cons with another player in a co-op mode. This will see one player take up the role of the pilot and the other act as the gunner. And if you are in search of that truly nostalgic feel and happen to own a N64 controller for your Switch 2, you can use that in this game as well. Let’s not forget, since this is a Star Fox game, you will be piloting a plethora of vehicles like ships, tanks, and a submarine to boot!
The most bizarre announcement from this 15-minute direct was the inclusion of online play, with the catch being that while in Nintendo voice chat, players can use interactive avatars that mirror their facial reactions. In the short demo, the feature admittedly looked very cool, but the real test will be when it’s out in the wild amongst fans in a more casual setting.
A Brand New-ish Adventure
Coming off the heels of his inclusion in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, Nintendo was right to cash in on the Star Fox hype and release a brand new game just a few short months after the movie’s release. Taking it a step further, releasing a Star Fox 64 remake gives those newly minted fans the best Star Fox experience to date. Luckily, you don’t have to wait too long as Star Fox looks to release on June 25th for the Nintendo Switch 2. All Star Fox fans can hope for now is that Nintendo sees the demand for more Star Fox games and gives us a definitive new entry to the series somewhere down the line.
