While it’s fun to talk about the compelling characters or zany story moments of Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s a whole other half to this award-winning title: the battles. Larian Studios does an effective job of making combat progress in complexity and challenge while still being easy to understand. There are a few exceptions to this rule, though. One of these trickier-than-usual fights is against Dror Ragzlin, one of the goblin leaders in Act 1. So, for a smoother Baldurs Gate 3 playthrough, how do you defeat Dror Ragzlin?

Where to find Dror Ragzlin

When you’re looking for the three goblin leaders, you’ll find Dror Ragzlin in the sacked Temple of Selune at the back of the Goblin Camp. Then, once inside, he’ll be in the furthestmost room. He’ll be atop an altar trying to cast Speak with Dead a mind flayer corpse. Warning: you may not want to let him talk to it. It may reveal a secret or two of yours.

Ways to defeat Dror Ragzlin in Baldur’s Gate 3

Between his Leadership buff and heavy-hitting, Dror Ragzlin is one of the most difficult early-game bosses. Luckily, there are a few clever ways to approach this fight. Whichever way you fight, though, it’s smart to get rid of Dror Ragzlin first and then deal with all the rest of the goblins in his throne room.

  • The Rafters: One of the simplest yet most effective ways to approach the Dror Ragzlin fight is in the rafters. Ranged weapons are your friends with a thick, heavy-hitting enemy, so keep your distance and let Astarion and Gale be your best friends. Be warned, though, Astarion cannot properly jump up to the top rafters from the Minthara side of the zone, so be careful about where you place him.
  • The Pit: If you pay attention to the floors, there’s an opening into the spider pit near his altar. You’ll have to destroy the floorboards, though, which will upset the goblins. But, if you can position him properly, throwing him down into the pit will insta-kill him.
  • Good old-fashioned fight tips: Sometimes, you just can’t avoid the full-front attack. If that’s the kind of fight you end up in, the best thing you can do (other than reload an earlier save) is have slightly tankier characters like Halsin, Karlach, or Lae’Zel on the front line. They’ll eat his heavy hits while other characters wail on him from afar.

Can you kill Dror Ragzlin without getting caught?

Theoretically, yes. However, unlike killing Minthara and Priestess Gut, it’s a lot harder to get away with. The other two have their lone little corners of the temple that are easy to clear out without alerting the rest of the camp. If any of the goblins in Dror’s throne room suspect or get upset with you, though, that will trigger all other goblins to see you as the enemy.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll have to get clever to off Dror Ragzlin without alerting his guard. Surround him in explosive barrels and ignite them with a fire arrow while sneaking—and don’t get caught. Get him underneath one of the braziers, drop it, and hope he burns to death. These are the kinds of methods you’ll need to try to make his death look accidental. Hitman-style, one might say.

It will admittedly be very difficult so be prepared to save and keep trying. Just get creative with your items and the items around the room.

What loot does Dror Ragzlin Drop?

Once you’ve defeated Drord Ragzlin, he drops a couple of key items: a Speak with Dead spell, the Mauler hammer, a javelin, the key to his treasure trove, and a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen. If you are choosing to use Illithid parasites, that last item is the most important. If you use his key on the iron door in the back of the room, you’ll also get quite a bit of gold.
