Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 brings back Insomniac Games’ version of Peter Parker and Miles Morales in a big way. Before this release, the two games it previously made had a lot of what you know and love about these stories but changed them in key areas to make them their own thing at the same time. You should have a pretty good idea that Venom is one of the key villains in the game this time, but where one symbiote appears, you probably are expecting another not to be far behind. Is Carnage in Spider-Man 2?
SPOILER ALERT: There are some side story spoilers ahead for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Does Carnage appear in Spider-Man 2?
While Carnage does not make an appearance in the main story of Spider-Man 2, completing one of the side story arcs of the game will tease the red symbiote for the future. As you fight crime around New York City, you will notice a Cult who likes setting things on fire. After a bit, you will receive a side mission where you enter a building to save some trapped workers before you encounter the cult on a larger scale and team up with Wraith, AKA Yuri Watanabe, to stop them.
Throughout these missions, Yuri notes that she knows the cult leader from her time as a cop. He only goes by the name “The Flame,” but she notes that he has a string of horrible murders in his past and is a genuinely bad person that she wants to take off the streets permanently. Of course, this goes against Spider-Man’s ethics, and you end up fighting Yuri and stopping her from killing him.
In the final mission of this side run, Peter and Yuri work together to stop the Flame from causing a massive explosion. To do this, they off-rail an Oscorp train set to run into their explosives. While they are successful in stopping this, Spider-Man (voiced by the great Yuri Lowenthal) gets caught under the train, and Yuri is knocked out. The Flame then comes out, and it is revealed that he wanted them to stop the train so he could grab the symbiote that lay inside. Being a cult leader, he prophesizes, “And when the Crimson Hour rolls over this earth, it shall bring truth, judgment, and carnage.” He then escapes by helicopter after trying to burn Spider-Man to death, but Yuri saves him.
Will Carnage be in Spider-Man 2 DLC?
If you didn’t understand by this point, The Flame and this symbiote will join together and become Carnage in the future. After the mission is over, Yuri tells Spider-Man that The Flame will go into hiding, maybe for years, so we take this to mean that Carnage will not wreak havoc on New York until the next mainline game. She also mentions that one of his past aliases is Cletus Kasidy, the name of the character from the comics.
There is always a chance that future DLC for Spider-Man 2 will bring Carnage in as a villain, but we believe Insomniac wants to save him for the next big thing. We love the way they tease him here. Insomniac has a knack for changing villains in these games, and we think they did a good job with Carnage.
