Will Link talk in the Legend of Zelda Movie?

Link is one of the most famous and memorable heroes in all of gaming. So many people have put themselves in his boots as they venture to save Hyrule. The thing is, outside of some special circumstances, Link has always been a silent protagonist. Just the Phillips CD-i games and the 1989 cartoon gave him a talking voice, and both instances annoyed audiences. With that in mind, will Link talk in The Legend of Zelda Movie?

Does Link speak in The Legend of Zelda Movie?

As of this writing, there is no confirmation on whether or not Link will speak in The Legend of Zelda Movie. In fact, we don’t even know who is playing the hero yet, just who is writing him. That won’t stop us from speculating on the subject, though.

We would be very surprised if Link were completely silent throughout an entire movie that he stars in. While that kind of thing works for video games, the same can’t be said in movies. It would be very awkward to see the main character just stare blankly at anyone who starts a conversation.

Of course, some “purists” will say you can’t let him speak ever, but that would also go against the Zelda games themselves. While we never hear Link speak as the player, there are instances where he definitely talks. Situations where he answers a question or Zelda’s diary in Breath of the Wild, which says the following:

“With so much at stake and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well… For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings.”

Canonically, Link does speak. It’s just a matter of the player not seeing him actually talk. If The Legend of Zelda Movie will let Link talk, we have no problem with it at all, but he should be much more mindful of when he talks rather than the blabbermouth versions seen in the old cartoon and CD-i games. If we look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie, we feel that that project made some characters who don’t speak outwardly much work, so hopefully, the same is done here.
