While there is still no indication that a remake will ever happen, the official Sonic the Hedgehog social media accounts have given us a look at some early Sonic Adventure concept art and what it all could have looked like when the game was in early development. The images cover all manner of the game, with a couple of interesting looks at a few playable characters, but the bigger emphasis is on the playable environments before they were playable.

Get a load of this early concept art for Sonic Adventure we found in our archives!

Of the 11 images included in the thread above, we see classic versions of Sonic and Knuckles, and even a look at Amy in a two-piece outfit that’s very different from her red dress, set in various environments. Early versions of the Egg Carrier, Mystic Ruins, Windy Valley, and the citizens of Station Square are included.

Speaking of those citizens, their design clearly drastically changed along with development. The way they look here appears more cartoonish and more in line with how Eggman looks. The finished-game citizens are more boring and cardboard-like, though some of that may have to do with the limitations of working with the Dreamcast in the late 90s.

The Egg Carrier is also very different from its finished look. The concept art here looks less like a carrier and more like a floating fortress covered in turrets and with Eggman’s face down below. We imagine seeing this fly in the sky above would have been quite intimidating.

Unfortunately, this batch of early Sonic Adventure Concept Art doesn’t include looks at Chaos, Big the Cat, or E-102 Gamma, though they might have been brought in later on in the process. We’re also sure this isn’t the full extent of unseen concept art for the game.

As a reminder, Sonic is celebrating his 35th birthday this year and has been focusing heavily on games that were released in the 1990s. While we fully believe that Sonic Adventure and its sequel are both games that could greatly benefit from modern-day remakes, we are expecting an announcement of a sequel to Sonic Frontiers this year.
