Fans of the long-running D&D/TTRPG series Critical Role will be well familiar with the wizard Caleb Widogast. A character played by Liam O’Brien and featured in the Mighty Nein campaign, he was loved by fans for his passion, inventiveness, and soft-spoken personality. Now Ulti Pro, makers of TTRPG and other game accessories, is releasing a new product based on this fire-themed wizard.
Caleb Widogast’s Game Master Spell Book is not technically a spell book at all. It is actually a freestanding game screen popularly used by gamemasters at the table. These screens are used to hide notes, plans, and miniatures that may make their way into play soon. They also have rules reminders and notes on the inside panels of the screen itself, making it an easy quick-reference guide. While Dungeons & Dragons released a standard one, the flexibility and utility of these has only increased across the last decade. There is more of a demand for game screens to be customized to meet the needs of each unique game and gamemaster style.
This game screen is themed after Caleb Widogast’s spell book that he carried around across the entire Critical Role campaign. It is a leatherette tri-fold screen with detailed bronze foil designs. Caleb themes in the screen include his beloved familiar Frumpkin the cat, personal notes and scribbles by Caleb, and some of his spells. There are also special doodles by Caleb’s friend Jester who was played by Laura Bailey in the campaign. Jester’s character was an artist, but you will need a special light to see these invisible doodles!
The screen goes beyond just nostalgia for the Mighty Nein’s adventures. It has static-cling reusable stickers for organizational purposes. There are write-on pockets usable with dry erase markers for quick note-taking. The pockets also hold up to ten standard-sized papers in each one so gamemasters can easily keep their game notes on hand. There are also initiative tracker-clips which can double as paperclips. The entire thing closes with a magnetic clip for easy storage.
